Fayetteville Community Solar and Energy Storage Farm and Design-Build

A Design-Build Project to Bring Renewable Energy Infrastructure to a North Carolina Community
Fayetteville, North Carolina

More than 210,000 people reside in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and it is home to U.S. Army base Fort Bragg. With its growing population, community leaders set out to create a more sustainable energy infrastructure system by developing and constructing a municipal community solar farm. Our design-build team served as the general contractor for the project, where we built a utility-scale renewable energy generation and energy storage system at Fayetteville Public Works Commission’s (PWC) Butler-Warner Generation Plant.

The system consists of a nominal one megawatt alternating current (MWAC) per 1.2 megawatt direct current (MWDC) solar photovoltaic (PV) array, and nominal 500 kilowatt direct current (kWDC) lithium-ion battery bank; wiring; inverters; and controls. This project is the first community-based solar field in North Carolina and one of less than 10 solar projects in the country that utilizes cutting-edge string inverters and a mini battery storage system combination. A ground-mounted array with a single axis tracking system was installed with a two-hour battery discharge capacity duration. Now live, the solar farm provides enough energy to support the equivalent of 100 homes.
