Louisa County, Virginia, was at the epicenter of the 5.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the East Coast in 2011. The county high school and an elementary school were among the hardest hit buildings, with extensive structural damage that forced immediate closure. Under an extremely tight deadline, we mobilized a multidiscipline team of engineers and architects to assess damage and create a comprehensive report with cost estimates for repair and/or replacement of the schools. We helped to make sure that the report would meet Virginia Department of Emergency Management and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requirements. Virginia's governor submitted the report to the president, which led to approval for federal disaster assistance.
