Novant Health’s Matthews Medical Center Renovation and Expansion

Upgrading Existing Spaces and Adding New Ones to Support a Growing Need in Labor and Delivery Healthcare
Matthews, North Carolina

Matthews Medical Center, part of the Novant Health network of healthcare facilities across North Carolina, had 23 existing labor delivery recovery and post-partum (LDRP) rooms in its facility, but was in need of a renovation and expansion to meet the growing need for labor and delivery healthcare support.

As part of the overall renovation, we designed upgrades to the existing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems across the facility. These upgrades included re-balancing the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system; new electrical and medical gas outlet connections to align with new room layouts; and medical gas mains to support the phased nature of the project.

Phase 2 of the project included the expansion, where we designed a central plant to include a chiller and emergency switchgear. The expansion includes 10 new LDRP rooms, two ante-partum rooms, four exam rooms, and a connector to the LDRP second floor in the existing building.
