Mule Creek Infill Complex

Expanding Rehabilitation Programs and Healthcare Services
Ione, California

The Mule Creek Infill Complex added 550,000 square feet across 23 new buildings to the existing state prison in Ione, California. The facility, which includes 1,584 beds in six dormitory-style housing units, enables the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to address overcrowding; expand rehabilitation programs; and enhance medical, mental health, and dental services for its inmate population.

Working with prime architect HOK and design-build contractor Hensel Phelps, we designed the medium-security complex to meet rigorous programmatic requirements for counseling, academic and vocational training, healthcare, and family visits. One of the six housing units supports enhanced outpatient programming for inmates requiring specialized mental healthcare. Program support buildings offer classrooms and career tech spaces, while work-zone buildings support a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on job training, such as construction trade experience. Programming includes a food processing facility where inmates can receive specialized vocational training.
